Note that table 1 is not at all inclusive of every known graphics software project, but is an enumeration of a few projects that I am aware of and that have some substantial following of users.  I won’t vouch for the absolute accuracy of the feature list, as I’ve used only one of these packages very intensively, and most of them not at all. I would advise to check out the features of the various projects, and make you own determination as to which may be a good choice to try. For the most part, the items are free, so there shouldn’t be much downside to a trial and error approach to this.

Using Blender to Color-Correct Video

Many people don’t know that Blender can be used as a non linear video editor, with some nice features like color grading, wiping, fading, and other special effects.   Many people use the program for things that are not video, and so a potential user of Blender for NLE might not think to try it.  I’ve put together a series of clips for a quick-hit list that sets up the NLE editing session for the purpose of brightening and color-correcting a video of my dog Hutch, undershot as usual, due to the video being shot indoors.

Video on the Cheap

Probably the cheapest way to create videos where convenience is at least a little appreciated is to purchase a so-called “bridge” camera.

A bridge camera is a camera designed to fill the niche between the least expensive camera type (compact / point ‘n shoot) camera and the much more expensive DSLR camera.  In recent years some DSLR cameras have had their pricing reduced from the historically (pretty high) costs.  Even with those recent reductions, for the budget minded (often novice level) user, the bridge camera still can find a good home and happy owner.
